Through the generous support of the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership and the 3M Company, the Summer Service-Learning Scholars Pilot Program provides faculty-student-community collaborative research teams the opportunity to engage in meaningful, academically-grounded, community-based projects for eight weeks during the summer. The program supports one to two projects involving the Boys and Girls Club as well as one to two projects involving any local community agency or non-profit. Teams consist of one full-time or two part-time students, one faculty mentor, and one to two community partners. Teams investigate questions or issues related to identified community needs using an academic framework and service-learning, community-based research, or action research methodology. Students are expected to present their final project results to the appropriate community group(s) and at the Seven Rivers Undergraduate Research Symposium in November 2019 OR the Service-Learning Showcase in April 2020.
The Summer Service-Learning Scholars program provides exceptionally high-impact, innovative academic experiences that:
- Meet identified community need(s) through collaborative work.
- Allow faculty to use their skills, experience, and knowledge to enrich and engage the local community.
- Encourage students to reflect upon and apply what they’ve learned in their courses for the common, local good.
- Support the work of local non-profits and community agencies.
- Support Viterbo University's mission of preparing faithful servants and ethical leaders.
The program endeavors to accomplish this purpose in ways that are consistent with our core values of service, stewardship, integrity, contemplation, and hospitality and the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan.
The program is open to:
- Viterbo students in good academic standing who will continue at Viterbo the semester following the summer service-learning program.
- Full-time Viterbo faculty.
- Community partners employed at local non-profits (e.g., Boys and Girls Club), community agencies, anchor institutions (i.e., Gundersen Lutheran or Mayo Franciscan Health Systems) or other organizations committed to community building and engagement.
Teams submit Summer Service-Learning Program (SSLS) applications and project proposals by the March deadline. Faculty mentors and community partners are asked to indicate their support via the endorsements in the application. Endorsements may be submitted independently or with the rest of the application.
Student team members receive $2,500 for full-time work or $1,250 for part-time work. Faculty mentors receive $750 for mentoring one full-time student or $1,000 for mentoring two part-time students.
