Admission to the Professional Social Work Program

The professional social work sequence of courses begins at the junior level. Students apply to the professional phase of the program by completing a formal application for admission. The application is to be submitted no later than Feb. 1 of the student's sophomore year for admission to the professional phase courses the following fall (junior year). It is the applicant's responsibility to assure a complete application by Feb.1. Only students changing their major or transferring to Viterbo after the Feb. 1 deadline may submit an application after that date. Professional phase courses are sequential and students can only begin these courses in the fall semester. Admission decision letters will be ready for pick up by March 1 in Nursing Center 107. Contact Jennifer Anderson-Meger with any questions about the admission application process at 608-796-3722, jimeger@viterbo.edu, or Nursing Center 409.

Advancement in the Social Work Program involves three steps:

  1. Declare a social work major. Work with your professional advisor and your social work faculty advisor to plan a course of study to complete the requirements for the social work major.
  2. Apply and be admitted to the professional phase of the social work program. Application typically occurs in the spring of the sophomore year.  Admitted students begin the professional phase courses the following fall semester (typically fall of the junior year).
    1. Application to the professional phase of the social work program is due by Feb. 1. The application includes the following:

      1. Complete the online Application for Admission
      2. Submit a personal statement following the guidelines in Part VII of the Application for Admission. Upload the document in the application.
      3. Provide an example of academic writing. Upload the document in the application.
      4. An interview may be required at the discretion of the admissions committee.
  3. Apply and be admitted to field education (typically fall of the senior year). The field education director sends out application material to students eligible to enter field education.
