  1. This clearly avoids the multiple variants saved in the database. But the translatable string starts with a comma, which will most probably make the translators puzzled, giving them no idea about the context of the string. They don't know whether there is a username or the phrase "Good morning", or whatever is before the comma. Not good. There are also security (XSS) problems with this solution, read on.
  2. While you might think moving the comma out solves the problem, it does not. The context even more missing from this example, since the translator will have no idea that anything appears before this string in the same sentence. Not good. Security problem still not resolved, read on.
  3. Solves the security problem at least. User provided data such as usernames, post titles, etc. might contain data which allow the submitter to perform XSS (Cross-site scripting) attacks. This is not a security book, so we are not going into the deep details here. The solution to that problem is that you need to escape the data. Assume that we are going to use this function in generating HTML, we should escape the output for HTML. So we selected check_plain(). That is great. Still, there can be languages where the username will not be in the beginning of the sentence, but somewhere in the middle or in the end. In this form it's impossible to position the username in the translations. That is

D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership Announces 2019–2020 Fellowship Awards

The D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership is awarding three Viterbo University faculty members with research fellowships for the 2019-20 academic year.   

  • Emily A. Dykman, religious studies and theology, “Forming Young Leaders: A Toolbox for Resilience in Christian Leaders for the Church and the World”
  • Lynne Kuhl, nursing, “Professional Identity in Nursing”
  • Melinda Langeberg, education, “An Ethical Necessity: Using Story to Combat Trauma in Elementary School Students”

Recipients of the fellowship are named “Fellows of the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership.” 

The purpose of the research fellowships is to increase the amount and quality of research conducted at Viterbo University related to ethics in leadership. It is expected that award recipients will produce publishable research that is also relevant to courses taught by the faculty member in existing or proposed programs.

Tech Gadgets at the Library

The library has a variety of gadgets available for scholarly and leisure needs and for short-term and long-term checkout. We have audio recorders, voice recorders, and video cameras for interviewing and PowerPoint remotes, clickers, and projectors for presentations or for use at conferences. We have laptop computers that can be checked out along with external DVD drives. The library also has a Mac laptop, webcams, external speakers, Swivl’s, desktop microphones and iPads. An equipment list is available to find out more information about the various gadgets available.

To discuss the logistics of your project or if you’d like to peruse the available gadgets, visit the library’s main desk or email library@viterbo.edu. Equipment may be used by all current Viterbo students, staff, and faculty.

Reserving Equipment for Class Use: iPads tend to be utilized heavily by students throughout the semester. We will make every effort to accommodate requests, as needed. Apps can be downloaded for classroom use but we appreciate attempts to plan ahead in order to meet your needs.
